1998 Subaru Legacy L Wagon
Driven by What's Inside

The second car I've ever had, the current daily driver that I've always wanted.

This one was purchased in December 2002 from Jina Auto Sales in Elmhurst, IL. There was one previous owner, apparantly a lady with kids, who sold it (probably a trade-in) to a Toyota dealership in the Elmhurst area.

Now there's a reason the Subaru Legacy wagon has been the top selling wagon in the United States since the early 1990s. You would think, of all the wagons that US automakers know how to make, someone would make one that's as good as a Subaru, but the AWD sells. It took them a while, but they finally got it - now we have things called Crossover vehicles. Subaru has made "crossover" vehicles for ages now.

Pictures
Thumbnails below reference to the pictures in higher resolution:

Engine: 2.5L SOHC 16-valve H4. 8.2:1 compression ratio. Something you don't find often in a car anymore - a boxer engine, providing lower center of gravity and higher reliability, since the crankshaft is only half the length of a traditional 4-cylinder. It save space too - the Subaru Loyale with an H4 has the spare tyre in the engine compartment! And of course, it's mounted longitudinally, sending power to the full-time AWD drivetrain.

Transmission: 5-speed manual

Drivetrain: full-time AWD with a viscous-coupling limited-slip center differential

Suspension: 4-wheel independent suspension with unequal-length rear lateral links for passive 4-wheel steering

Dimensions:

Curb Weight: 2975 pounds (Only a few pounds more than a 2005 VW Golf, so the Legacy is pretty light for a car of this capacity, partly due to the light-weight boxer motor, partly due to thin body panels that ding easier than any other vehicle I've ever experienced. Don't buy a Subaru if you care a lot about parking lot dings - or paint chips, but that's another matter. Appearance comes second to performance for me though.)

Cargo volume - 36.1 cubic feet (Just 3 cubic feet short of a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and about the same capacity as the big Audi Allroad that is 5" longer, and definitely more than twice the capacity of a Ford Taurus sedan, not even mentioning how it's hard to get anything into a trunk with a trunklid as opposed to a hatchback anyway)

Turning Diameter: 34.8 feet (very awesome stat - In comparison, the tiny Audi TT has a 34.2-foot turning diameter. The Subaru WRX has a 35.4-foot turning radius, and a 4-inch shorter wheelbase. It definitely does U-turns pretty well.)

Ground Clearance: 6.1 inches (but the front bumper really hinders approach angles)
    Wheelbase: 103.5 inches
    Track - Front: 57.5 inches
    Track - Rear: 57.3 inches
    Length: 184.5 inches
    Width: 67.5 inches
    Height: 57.1 inches
    Headroom - Front: 39.5 inches
    Headroom - Rear: 38.8 inches
    Legroom - Front: 43.3 inches
    Legroom - Rear: 34.8 inches
Shoulder room - Front: 54.1 inches
Shoulder room - Rear: 53.6 inches

Modifications:

    - EJ257 shortblock - 2.5L H4, 8.2:1 compression ratio
    - EJ25 SOHC 16-valve heads
    - EJ25 SOHC intake manifold and fuel injectors
    - K&N Filtercharger - air filter replacement
    - Fidanza aluminum flywheel: 9.5 lbs. from No Limit Motorsport. I think the stock one is almost 30 pounds, it was pretty gross.
    - Axxis Ultimate kelvar brake pads from Carbotech Engineering (.46 coefficient of friction, 100F-900F operating range)
    - Valvoline High Perf Synpower brake fluid, dry boiling point 503F, wet boiling point 343F.
    - Apexi S-AFC - fuel computer
    - TD04L-13T turbo
    - WRX top-mount intercooler
    - WRX uppipe
    - HKS downpipe
    - 3" custom midpipe
    - Flo-pro muffler, stainless steel tip
    - WRX front crossmember
    - STi Group N motor mounts
    - STi Group N transmission mount
    - Tinted windows: platinum metallic film by Quality Glass Tinting
    - Hella 500 lights
    - Front seats from a GC8 RS Coupe
    - Grille from 95 Legacy
    - Driver-side mirror from 97 Legacy - larger than the 98 mirror and folds
    - GT hood with hood scoop

Wheels and Tires:
Subaru OEM GC8 takeoff alloy wheels, 16x7 +53 wheels, 16.5 pounds

    - Summer: Kumho Ecsta MX 205/55/16
    - Snow/Rally: Bridgestone Potenza G009 205/55/16

Stock Features:

    - power locks
    - power steering
    - power 4-channel ABS brakes with 10.1" front and 10.5" rear disks
    - a hill holder clutch! (no slipping backwards on hills)
    - dual airbags
    - split 60/40 folding rear seat with headrests and 3-point seat belts
    - AM/FM/Cassette/CD audio system
    - air conditioning (that shuts off automatically at full throttle, providing max power)
    - rear heating ducts (they are under the front seats)
    - cruise control
    - dual powered side mirrors
    - power windows, driver one-touch down feature
    - rear defroster and wiper with wash
    - rear cargo cover and light
    - dual front map lights
    - dual front cupholders
    - dual vanity mirrors
    - remote fuel door release
    - auto on/off headlights

Hood - The hood scoop provides air flow down through the intercooler.

GC8 RS Coupe Seats - An improvement comfort-wise over stock, though it does make the entire driving position exactly like a GC8 instead of a Legacy.

Instrument Cluster - It has the no-nonsense 90s Japanese instrument cluster with the cool indicator of which door is open.

Folding Mirror - The driver-side mirror is from a 97 Legacy, which is larger and folds compared to the 98 mirrors.

Door - It doesn't have an upper door frame so it looks pretty cool with the windows down.

Audio System - Audio is the familiar Subaru layout, and I have my 4-socket 12V adapter hooked up.

Center Console - I have a nice home for my little black model WRX, as well as a compartment for my 110V AC inverter to plug in cell phones, laptops, battery chargers and stuff.

Seat Belt compartment - Here's some attention to detail: a place to store seat belts in the rear seat so you don't lose them when you fold the backs down to expand the cargo area.

Cargo Area - Here are the 36.1 cubic feet of cargo area promised

Spare Tire Panel - The panel that covers the spare tire area doesn't even cover the whole cargo floor, so you can open it up without having to take everything out of the trunk.

Organizer - There's a reason why one would access that spare tire compartment more often - it has a huge organizer in it for tools, spare wiper blades, service manuals, jumper cables...

Spare Tire - Removing the organizer reveals a deep spare tire well that has a full diameter spare tyre.

Full-Sized Spare - It's deep enough for a full-sized spare too, by the way.

Radiator - The radiator has two huge fans to make sure the engine stays cool while idling in traffic.
